How patients, providers perceive chronic idiopathic constipation — 5 insights

Synergy Pharmaceuticals presented data on patients' struggles with chronic idiopathic constipation at Digestive Disease Week 2017.

Synergy Researchers surveyed more than 1,200 patients and 325 healthcare providers.

Here's what you should know.

1. More than 40 percent of patients expressed frustration with their CIC. Approximately 39 percent said they accepted their condition.

2. Seventy-eight percent of providers and 59 percent of patients weren't satisfied with the current pharmaceuticals treatments on the market.

3. Providers said the most challenging aspect of current treatments were inadequate responses to therapy, non-compliance and side effects.

4. Patients were dissatisfied with the efficacy and side effects of current treatment options. Eighty-four percent of patients said current treatment did not fully relieve their CIC.

5. Diarrhea was an undesirable side effect of treatment for both providers and patients.
