GI physician leader to know: Dr. William Sandborn of UC San Diego School of Medicine

William J. Sandborn, MD, is a professor of medicine and chief of the gastroenterology division at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He also serves as director of the UCSD Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center. He is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, American College of Gastroenterology and Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America. He is a past chairman of the International Organization for Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Dr. Sandborn has a professional interest in Crohn's disease, colon surgery, microscopic colitis, pouchitis and ulcerative colitis. He also directs a clinical research unit focused on conducting clinical trials in inflammatory bowel disease and developing new diagnostic modalities and medical therapies. He has published more than 408 articles in peer-reviewed journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He also authored the American Gastroenterological Association's new clinical decision support tool for Crohn's disease.

Dr. Sandborn earned his medical degree at Loma Linda (Calif.) University and completed his residency at Loma Linda University Medical Center. He completed his gastroenterology fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
