GI physician leader to know: Dr. Sidney Winawer of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center

Sidney J. Winawer, MD, is the Paul Sherlock Chair in Medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

He is also a professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr. Winawer introduced the idea of colonoscopy for screening as chair of the U.S. Multisociety Task Force guidelines committee. He has also headed the World Health Organization Collaborating Center for the Prevention of Colorectal Cancer, which established prevention guidelines.

. Dr. Winawer is a past president of the American College of Gastroenterology and currently serves as co-chair of the New York City Department of Health colorectal cancer screening campaign. He is also co-chair of the International Digestive Cancer Alliance.

He completed his medical degree at SUNY Downstate College of Medicine in Brooklyn, N.Y., and completed his residency training at the VA Hospital in New York. Dr. Winawer then completed his fellowship training at Boston City Hospital.
