GI in review: 4 major developments in the past two decades

A two-decade span in medicine leaves significant space for transformative strides forward. Here are four major developments that have occurred in the gastroenterology field over the past 20 years, according to a Medscape report.

•    Gastroesophageal reflux disease and proton pump inhibitors. PPIs have played a significant role in reducing refractory esophageal strictures resulting from GERD, as well as mitigating upper GI disease complications in general.
•    Colorectal cancer screening. Over the past 20 years, colonoscopy has become the gold standard for colorectal cancer screening. Additionally, new technologies have joined the ranks of CRC screening options.
•    Hepatitis C treatment. New treatments for HCV are effective, with significantly reduced side effects.
•    Fecal microbiota transplantation. FMT has demonstrated efficacy in treating refractory Clostridium difficile infection.
