Antihypertensive drug use may be a risk factor for colorectal polyps, according to a study published in the Journal of Digestive Diseases.
Here are five insights:
1. Researchers analyzed 1,318 consecutive patients who underwent total colonoscopy for the first time.
2. Personal data including comorbidities and all medications were obtained through a questionnaire.
3. Colorectal polyps were found in 43.8 percent of subjects.
4. The prevalence of colorectal polyps was 57.6 percent in patients receiving hypertension treatment and 35 percent in patients without such treatment.
5. A multivariate analysis showed that age, waist circumference, drinking, smoking, and antihypertensive drug use were independent risk factors for colorectal polyps.
