Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas awards Dr. Navkiran Shokar $3.7M — 3 key notes

The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas awarded Navkiran Shokar, MD, $3.7 million to study colorectal cancer, El Paso Inc. reports.

Here's what you should know:

1. Dr. Shokar is Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso's vice chair for research.

2. She is using the grant to expand the reach of the Southwest Coalition for Colorectal Cancer Screening. The coalition is made up of public, private, nonprofit and for-profit providers.

3. The coalition aims to increase the percentage of El Pasoans who are screened for colorectal cancer. Currently, 54 percent of eligible adults undergo colonoscopies in El Paso.
