The move away from the traditional fee-for-service model is putting pressure on physicians to explore alternative routes.
Accountable care organizations are the most common alternative model gastroenterologists participate in. Thirty-one percent of gastroenterologists report being part of an ACO, according to the Medscape Gastroenterologist Compensation Report 2015. An additional 8 percent of GI physicians plan to join an ACO this year.
Less common in GI are concierge practices and cash-only practices, but they are an option. Three percent of gastroenterologists report being part of concierge practice, while 1 percent of gastroenterologists report being part of a cash-pay practice.
