5 key thoughts from Dr. Brian Hudes on GI physician entrepreneurship

Physician's Money Digest featured gastroenterologist Brian Hudes, MD, discussing his success as an entrepreneur.

Here are five key thoughts form the article:

1. When choosing his practice location, Dr. Hudes researched internet databases to identify communities with good household incomes and insurance. He pinpointed an area where a hospital was supposed to be developed, but wasn't there yet, and there weren't any other gastroenterologists.

2. As the practice grew, Dr. Hudes needed more office space. Instead of renting, as he had been doing, he discussed purchasing a different space and developing a building nearby with his landlord and was able to purchase ownership in the space.

3. Dr. Hudes approached a hospital about opening an endoscopy center, but the hospital wasn't interested so he built the center himself. He grew the practice into a four-physician office with the endoscopy center.

4. As he needs grew, Dr. Hudes started an anesthesia service and pathology service and billing company when he couldn't find a good company with his EMR.

5. Dr. Hudes consulted with his financial adviser after growing his business and asked how much he needed to retire. When he received that figure, he sold his Atlantic Gastro group and moved on to the next step in his personal and professional life. He now has a luxury and classic car dealership.
