SurgCenter Development, a Pismo Beach, Calif.-based ASC management company, provided nearly 7,000 joint replacements at its surgery centers last year.
The number of joint replacements in the United States is on the rise due to the aging baby boomer generation, among other factors. The traditional joint replacement procedure requires multiple days recovery in the hospital; however, last year more than 96 percent of SurgCenter Development's joint replacements were discharged in the same day.
The patients typically underwent a four-hour recovery period after surgery and the readmission rate was less than 1 percent.
"Because of advances in surgical technique and pain control, we are able to perform what was once a very complex procedure in a few hours and offer patients a shorter recovery time in the comfort of their own homes," said Stacey Berner, MD, principal and CEO of SurgCenter Development. "We are going to continue to see the number of patients and procedures climb and to see joint replacement surgeries at ASCs become the norm in 2017."
SurgCenter Development includes 1,250 surgeons and 107 ASCs across the United States.
