Here are three key reasons why Charles Bush-Joseph, MD, is a well-regarded leader both in his medical practice at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush in Chicago as well as numerous professional organizations.
Dennis Viellieu, CEO of Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush: Dr. Bush-Joseph is an ideal leader and mentor for the organization because he believes in and trusts his people and team. Once you earn his confidence he completely trusts you and the team to execute in the best way possible. He provides the guidance and direction needed but does not worry about managing or getting involved in the details, which is very empowering for the team. And he stands by and supports the team regardless of success or failure on a project and uses the failures as learning experiences.
He also very quickly analyzes data and makes decisions about how to best move forward and is very open to changing direction or approach as projects move forward and develop. He never gets bogged down by what has happened and keeps firmly focused on what's the best way to move forward toward the goal or objective.
Chuck also understands the value of time and compromise and works towards larger picture solutions rather than getting mired in the details of what will not work or why it will not work. He is a compassionate person and leader and he is able to act in the best interest of the organization regardless of his personal interests.
Brian Cole, MD, Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Rush OPH and Section Head, Center for Cartilage Restoration at Rush in Chicago: Dr. Cole describes Dr. Bush-Joseph's leadership as follows:
1. Open minded
2. Forward-thinking
3. Respectful of others
4. Allows others to express their opinions and supports collective decision-making
Scott Becker, Publisher of Becker's Healthcare: Dr. Bush-Joseph has the challenging job of maintaining a platform/environment in which some of the very best and most strong-minded, forward-thinking orthopedic physicians can thrive. He grows this platform with tremendous help from his team without imposing his will on others. This level and type of leadership is unusual in most environments but when it works with a leader who is well respected, it's extremely helpful to an organization with remarkable talent.
Dr. Bush-Joseph is a professor at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago and head team physician of the Chicago White Sox. He was elected to the Major League Baseball Medical Advisory Board and was president of the Major League Baseball Team Physician Association in 2012.

He has held committee responsibilities with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.
