In 2014, 1.1 percent of all Medicare cases performed in ASCs resulted in subsequent hospital visits within three days of surgery; 2 percent resulted in hospital visits within seven days of surgery, according to MedPAC's Report to Congress: Medicare Payment Policy in March 2017.
The subsequent visits to the hospital include inpatient admissions, observation services and emergency department visits. The visits don't include hospital visits for trauma or mental health services.
