If the top 50 markets in the U.S. achieved 80 percent market penetration, the healthcare system would realize a huge cost savings. In a report titled "Disruption in the Surgical Care Marketplace," Franklin Trust Ratings reported the healthcare system could save $10.5 billion by meeting this benchmark.
The report based this assumption on average net costs of $4,337 per hospital-based outpatient surgical procedure and $2,429 per freestanding ASC-based procedure, only including procedures performed in both settings.
Here are the top 15 markets that stand to save the most by reaching 80 percent ASC market penetration:
1. Cleveland: $1.08 billion
2. New York: $1.06 billion
3. Chicago: $943.8 million
4. Boston: $909.5 million
