South Carolina's CON program could end in 2018: 3 things to know

The South Carolina House of Representatives voted to end the state's certificate of need program, according to a report by The Post and Courier. Here are three things to know about the potential demise of the legislation regulating new healthcare services in the state.

1. Yesterday, the House passed a measure that would eliminate South Carolina's CON program. The vote was 103 to one.

2. Representative Jim Merrill (R-Charleston), along with several others, argued that the free market, rather than the CON, program should regulate new health services, according to the report.

3. If the measure becomes law, the CON program will be eliminated in 2018. Following one more vote, the bill will move to the state Senate for consideration.
