Baton Rouge, La.-based Champion Medical Center is closing its Baton Rouge-based Howell Place surgical center, The Advocate reports.
Here's what you should know:
1. The hospital has yet to submit a formal notice of closure, but officials have told state administrators the surgical center would close "in the very near future."
2. The center opened in early 2014. It has 11 beds and specializes in spinal surgery, sports management, pain management, gastroenterology and foot and ankle surgery.
3. The center was owned by NextHealth. NextHealth is associated with healthcare executive Semyon Narosov. Mr. Narosov was connected to Dallas-based Forest Park Medical Center, which closed because of bankruptcy. Mr. Narosov was indicted by the federal government over a possible kickback scheme.
