Abercrombie, Hot Topic & health systems — Hospitals eye retail space for outpatient clinics

A Wall Street Journal report says health systems are looking at retail space in shopping malls as the potential sites for outpatient clinics, HealthcareDive reports.

Here's what you should know.

1. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute opened a 140,000-square-foot clinic in the former Chestnut Hill, Mass.-based Atrium Mall.

2. Healthcare Dive reports the trend of health systems moving to retail space was made in response to consumers' online shopping preferences. "As more people shop online, retail tenants pull out and malls are left with empty space to fill," HealthcareDive reports.

3. Healthcare Dive cited a report from JLL Corporate Solutions which stressed the importance of bringing services closer to where patients live, and building in locations that health systems could potentially repurpose.
