2 Oregon health systems fight legislation allowing 24-hour stays at ASCs: 4 things to know

Salem (Ore.) Health and Medford, Ore.-based Asante Health System are fighting a bill that would expand recovery times at ASCs in Oregon, according to The Lund Report.

Here are four things to know:

1. The health systems worked with Rep. Cedric Hayden, R-Cottage Grove, on an amendment to House Bill 2664, which would permit overnight stays at ASCs.

2. In its present form, the House bill would pertain to 16 ASCs in the state and would allow patients to stay between 24 hours and 52 hours.

3. The health systems' amendment seeks to form another work group to analyze the bill as it relates to overnight stays at ASCs. Roy Vinyard, president and CEO of Asante, told the Lund Report the health system is opposing the bill as they believe "it has not been fully vetted" and "this extended-care center is in essence a mini-hospital."

4. Rep. Knute Buehler, R-Bend, an advocate for the bill, said countless studies have confirmed ASCs' efficacy in lowering costs and maintaining quality.
