Bringing caregivers into the fold: 5 strategies for nurses to improve the patient experience

A patient's caregiver is an integral part of the patient experience. HIT Consultant details five ways nurses can improve the patient experience.

Here's what you need to know:

1. Get caregivers on board. Nurses should tell their staff about the importance of making caregivers aware of the treatment plan following discharge. If caregivers understand their role, they can help improve patients' care.

2. Have clinical staff work with the caregivers. Clinical staff should ensure they are paying attention to the patient and caregiver.

3. Staff members should be accountable for all patients. Staff members should work hand-in-hand to improve care for all the facility's patients, rather than only focusing on the patients specifically designated to that nurse.

4. Educate staff about the correlation between reimbursement and the patient experience. Staff members should be fully aware that the experience they provide could play a part in the reimbursement the facility receives.

5. Care should be consistent. Quality care should be replicated for each patient and facilities should track information to learn best practices to improve.
