HHS: Agency will move 30% of fee-for-service Medicare payments to value-based payments by end of 2016

United States Department of Health & Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell said the agency will meet their goal of transitioning 30 percent of fee-for-service Medicare payments to value-based payments by the end of this year, according to Healthcare Dive.

Here are three highlights:

1. In 2015, HHS set a goal tying 50 percent of Medicare payments to alternative payment models by the end of 2018.

2. Presently, at least 20 percent of payments are made through alternative payment models.

3. As of March 2015, some of the results from moving toward alterative payment models include:
•    $417 million in Medicare savings
•    Decreased hospital readmission in Medicare by almost 8 percent
