Budget, Staffing Cuts Hurt OIG's Ability to Investigate Medicare Fraud

HHS' Office of Inspector General will lose 400 staff members due to budget cuts, and many of these job cuts will impact the organization's ability to investigate Medicaid and Medicare fraud, according to a report from The Center for Public Integrity. The agency has already neglected as many as 1,200 allegations of wrongdoing this year, despite the Obama administration prioritizing the cracking down on wasteful healthcare spending and abuse.

Officials say budget cuts and staffing reductions have left the OIG without the resources necessary to sift through all the complaints and determine which are legally viable.
