CMS announced that 359,000 physicians intend to participate in four of CMS' Alternative Payment Models in 2017.
Here's what you should know.
1. CMS will reimburse the physicians on the quality of care they give to their patients, instead of through the fee-for-service model.
2. The alternative payment programs are: the Medicare Shared Savings Program, the Next Generation Accountable Care Organization model, the Comprehensive End-Stage Renal Disease Care model and the Comprehensive Primary Care Plus model.
3. In addition to the 359,000 physicians, the payment models will benefit more than 12.3 million Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries.
4. Patrick Conway, MD, acting principal deputy administrator and director of the CMS Innovation Center said, "These models demonstrate CMS' commitment to partner with providers to improve care for patients. My mother and over 12 million other Medicare beneficiaries are now cared for by doctors and other clinicians in payment models that focus on better health outcomes and coordinated, high quality care.
