A new postoperative pain anesthesia modality will allow Irvine, Calif.-based Hoag Orthopedic Institute to expand its outpatient total joint replacement services.
Here are five things to know:
1. The institute's anesthesiologists received training in total continuous nerve block.
2. This modality is intended to reduce the need for postoperative narcotics and enhance the likelihood of same-day total joint replacement surgery.
3. The procedure is designed to decrease postoperative pain and quicken recovery.
4. Allied Anesthesia and Newport Harbor Anesthesia Group arranged the training workshop.
5. Greg Hickman, MD, medical director at Gulf Breeze-Fla.-based Andrews Institute of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, directed the training workshop.
"By training our doctors in this method, we've put the institute on the forefront of modern joint replacement surgery, expanding the opportunity for patients to have a total joint replacement and go home the same day," said Klane Hales, MD, Hoag Orthopedic Institute medical director and Allied anesthesiologist.
