Effective pain management is key for a successful transition to value-based care. New practice models have sprung up to ensure a seamless patient experience that incorporates pain management.
For example, the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery model is an evidence-based care improvement process for surgical patients focused on a multidisciplinary approach to surgical care. ERAS protocols have resulted in shorter lengths of hospital stay and reductions in complications, according to a 2017 JAMA Surgery article.
Another model, the Perioperative Surgical Home, is a patient-centric, team-based model created by leaders from the American Society of Anesthesiologists. The model focuses on efficient care coordination amongst an interdisciplinary team of clinicians.
Both models rely on proven anesthesia care protocols. Multimodal anesthesia treatment, which involves administering two or more analgesic agents, is considered an effective pain management protocol, particularly allowing higher acuity cases to be performed in the outpatient setting. The pain treatment combines drugs with different mechanisms of action, for example, combining opioid and nonopioid pharmacologic agents, according to a Medscape report.
In a webinar conducted by Becker's Healthcare, Ray Soto, MD, professor of anesthesiology at Rochester, Mich.-based Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, will discuss the challenges and opportunities of using multimodal analgesia treatments as part of the ERAS and PSH models.
